I spent many days and nights at Camp Bethel. I went to school with Johnny & Sammy Henry back in the old days of 1950s and 1960s.
John D Henry and my dad were friends back in the 1930s. My dad Bert Stevens was part of John Henry’s first missionary work in Pound, Va. My dad is mentioned in Mr. Henry’s biography.
I have many fond memories about the Henry family and the camp. I also still remember some of the bible verses and when Mr. Henry would come to Wise Elementary and tell Bible stories on his felt board, I think that is what it was called, and we would get to miss a class.
I am now or will be 72 this April and I tell people about Mr. Henry and his influence on me. I’m sure things have changed a lot since I was there and the next time I’m in Wise I will try to get by there just to have a look.
